Session 2: Ironman Week 2 Notes

Review: All of us are becoming a certain type of person; the type of person we are today isn’t going to be the type of person we’ll be down the road…formation is inevitable.

What we believe matters, we are constantly being shaped, our belief about God impacts us. What do we think about when we think about God? How big is the box that we put God into?

We might think that we can’t define God ; however, we live out our lives in away where we are defining God…we try to manage Him.

Video: Louie Giglio: How do we know God is indescribable? He is greater than any thought we ever had. He created the universe to as a display of His glory.

Intro:

What if we can start thinking about what this incredible God wants to do with our lives?

G.K. Chestertown: When we don’t worship God we don’t worship nothing, we worship anything.

What are some of those formative influences that have really shaped your images of God that impact what you do and why you do it?

Exodus 3 – The Israelites had just suffered 25+ years of slavery…how do you think that shaped their image of God?

Moses is just trying to live his life and then Moses meets God. God reveals himself through a burning bush and tells Moses that He raises up one person to go to the Pharaoh and ask that those people he has enslaved to let them go. Then Moses has to reintroduce God to the Israelites.

7 The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."

Moses tries to get out of this for two chapters…but God tells Moses that He will be with Him. Moses asks God, “How do I introduce you?” God tells Him, “Say that I AM sent you.”

John 8:58 – Jesus calls Himself, “I Am”

Moses when you go to pharaoh you have to communicate that you are coming on the behalf of a God who needs nothing. (When God created the world He created it out of nothing.)

Acts 17:24-25 - 24"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

He has no needs, He doesn’t depend on anyone, He doesn’t need our company to be whole. But He created us so that we could share in His creation.

A.W. Tozer Were every man on earth to become an atheist, it could not affect God in any way. He is what He is in Himself without regard to any other. To believe in Him adds nothing to His perfections; to doubt Him takes nothing away

Revelations 4:8-11

8Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." 9Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
11"You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being."

He can handle our worries, our doubts, our fears, our problems, He is who He is in Himself. He is also a God in Exodus Chapter 3 who hears the cries of His people and He comes down. And then He comes down again as Jesus to free us once again from sin.
