Ironman Week 7 Notes

Video Clip – Liar Liar “What are you doing?....I’m kicking my ass.”

Opening Thought: Sometimes we end up kicking our own ass.

Review:

Is there really someone out there willing to love and accept us as we are?

  • The Myth: Right Behavior + Less Wrong Behavior = Godly
  • The Truth: It’s about a transformation of the heart that brings us closer to God.

Today:

2 Samuel 11 – 12: Story of David and Bathsheba

Summary: While the other kings were out to battle David stayed at home. Went out for a walk and saw a woman bathing. Saw that she was beautiful: At this point David hasn’t done anything wrong, the attraction he had was God given. It’s the actions that follow that cause him to sin.

He’s confronted by Nathan the prophet through a story 2 Samuel 12…which helps David see he is guilty. David then writes Psalm 51.

Table Talk:

What "lie" do you think David believed that got him in "Hot water"?

How would you describe David's reactions to the mess he had gotten himself in? Why do you think he didn't take the "high road" of being honest and coming clean?

God had given us one face, and you make yourself another“Hamlet” William Shakespeare

The heart is a place where our desires and longings reside. We are meant to really live to have our desires and longings in God not independent from Him.

Have you ever done something, going into it knowing it was wrong, while you did it you knew it was wrong, knew the consequences but said, “This is worth it.” The voices that we listen to avoid the pain of our longings and our desires will tell us what to do.

  • Some voices that lead to actions that produce a lot of joy
  • Some voices that lead to actions that produces guilt. God doesn’t shame people, but He’ll guide us in the right direction, show us who we are meant to be.

Our sin will eventually go public, but we will still try to control how “ugly” it will look to others. How much energy does it take to manage the chaos? We have options in how we react to our sin:

  • Hide it (wear a mask, cover it up, deny it)
  • Distribute blame (others, things, God)
  • Allowing God to cleanse us (To get back to the real me)

2 Samuel 12:7-9 God asks David why he tried to find himself apart from Him.

Video 2: Lump 010 from Rob Bell – “There is nothing you can do to make God love you less.”

Psalm 51 - Have mercy to me oh God, according to your unfailing love…the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise…

David’s sin would have had less causality if he had come clean sooner. It is better late than never to come clean.
