Session 2: Ironman Week 5 Notes

Review:

Memory Verse: Romans 11:33-36

33Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and[a] knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
34"Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?"[b]
35"Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay him?"[c]
36For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.

“Every single one of us is becoming a certain type of person” What we think about when we think about God shapes us. If we don’t reconstruct the different images and views of God that we grew up with, we will create a “manageable deity”

If we aren’t giving God our true attention, then who are we giving our true attention to?

Video: Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Scene: Indiana Jones and his father struggle to escape the collapsing cavern. “Let it Go”

God gives us creation and we take creation and replace God – Idolatry - We are capable of looking at things and looking at God at the same time. If it isn’t Jesus Christ that we are searching for, we don’t really “want” it.

How would you define the word “Idol”:

Possesses us

Control of life to

Misplaced Focus

What happiness is contingent on

Time lock

Whatever we look to, to give us a sense of well being other than God…misplaced worship.

Our minds are an idol factory, because you and I were created to worship. If you can define God, you have your idol.

We worship to fill our hearts and when we become impatient or refuse to follow what God asks, we fill the gaps with something other than Him.

Exodus 32 – Moses goes to the mountain to get the Ten Commandments from God. Meantime Aaron builds a golden calf for the people who desire a god. In this situation there is a sin beneath the sin. The first sin is the Golden Calf (idolatry), the sin beneath this sin is unbelief in God’s faithfulness. The people believed, “God was too slow.”

Faith = Trust
