Ironman Week 4 Notes

Opening Thought - Our View of God determines how we live our lives – Agree or Disagree

Video – Bill Cosby on Noah

From last week:

Iceberg analogy –

  • 10%-15% is seen above the surface – But it gets 90% attention from others (The public piece)
  • 85%-90% is below the surface – But it gets only 10% attention from others (The private piece)
  • Eventually the private piece will hit the surface.
  • We are constantly being shaped internally and externally.
  • We are 100% responsible with what we do with the voices that shape us.
Ben Carson - "You can never overload your brain."
Edward John Smith - captain of the Titanic. His goal was to get the ship there on time or under time. He took the ship on a path that was filled with danger because of his pride.

This Week:

Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice to the world….

“As great as this life is, this isn’t it”

If we take the “heat” up just a little bit to live our lives like a different type of man, things can change exponentially.

Don’t tell people how you are going to be different, just be different. We get in trouble for telling people what we are going to do and then not do it. Do it first.

We act ourselves into trouble and we tell ourselves we are going to get out of it, but then we act ourselves back into it.

Jesus wants to change the core, change the source.

Genesis 1 – 3

We sometimes mistaken Gen 3 as ground level, but it’s really Gen 1. When we do that we truncate the Gospel. Life was meant to be a certain way before Genesis 3 ever happened.

  • Gen 1:27 - 31 – So God created man in his own image…God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
  • Gen 2:15-17 – The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it...eat from any tree…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil…you will surely die.
  • What is God saying here? “I want you to live in relationship with Me and each other.”
  • Augustine – “The key to life is to order our loves properly.”
  • Gen 3:1 – “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals…”
  • A great lie has a lot of truth. The serpent starts out with taking a positive and turning it into a negative. This creates a hook in the conversation.
  • Gen 3:4 - The serpent tells truth by saying your eyes will be open, but lies when he says you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
  • Gen 3:6 – What happened between when she saw and when she ate? What formed in her heart? A war regarding her imagination began between what is true and what isn’t.
  • What gets us in the most trouble is ourselves. God never lets Adam and Eve blame Satan for this. A question we have face in our lives, “Is God holding out on me…can I really trust God to take care of me?”, we have to ask ourselves, “Is it going to be our way or His?”
  • Gen 3:10 – They hide from the one they are meant to be with.
  • Gen 3:21 – “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” When we sin, God still loves us and provides for us.

Challenge: Watch our words… Are you a Christian or a follower of Christ?
