Ironman Week 5 Notes

Opening Thoughts: Video Clip – Friday Night Lights – We all are exposed to different voices.

Life is a gift but it’s short.

Review:

  • Reality is we are becoming someone, not if but what.
  • What flows in, through and out of you? All it needs is time and opportunity.
  • We all have role for shaping the world, which is determined by how our heart is shaped.

Today’s Big Question:

We say that God loves us but have we really allowed that voice into places that are going to shape us?

Major issue from the Garden: Does God really have my best interest at heart?

Formation: The process of replacing destructive ideas/images with ideas/images that fills the mind of Jesus. We need to learn how to identify the things that shape us and then ask why they have so much power in my life.

1 Samuel 15 – Why didn’t Saul ultimately do what he was told to do (Note his excuses)? How does he try to “off load” and “cover up” what went on? What “external voice” do you think was shaping Saul’s heart and eventually his actions?

Voices Out There:

  • Culture – Voices from Out There: We are defined by the Ball Field(physical), Bill Fold(financial) Bed Room(sexual).
  • Relationships – Teacher, Peers, Parents, Extended Family. 1 Samuel 15:17 “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel?...” 1 Samuel 15:24: Saul admits to his sin came because he feared his peers.
  • Experiences – Losses and wounds impact all of us. What do we do with the voices that come from joy, pain, wins and losses?

God has embedded in our hearts a sense of security and importance. If we look to anything but what God has intended we become like a Petri dish (A place of many cultures). We are all made to worship a living God; however, idolatry interferes with that. Idolatry is whatever we look to give us our sense of well being other than God. Desires can be lived out in the right way or the wrong way.

Our wounds, scars and holes in our hearts can be healed when they are identified and we ask, “Why do they scar us and where did they come from?”

1 Peter 2:11 – "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul." A man is a slave to whatever masters him.

What owns you? What voice do you hear?
